Land Acknowledgement
In the spirit of truth and reconciliation, we acknowledge that the office of Muskoka Futures stands on the ancestral lands of the Anishnaabeg people, including the Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi Nations—collectively known as the Three Fires Confederacy. Muskoka’s soil carries the footsteps of the Huron-Wendat and the Haudenosaunee Nations, who have left their indelible mark on this land. This territory was once the heart of the Wendat Nation’s existence, and we recognize the Southern portions of Muskoka as the traditional territory of the Wendat, who resided in Simcoe County between AD 1300 and 1650. During those centuries, they traversed Muskoka regularly, leaving a legacy of connection to this place. We acknowledge the impact of colonization, including the tragic chapters of genocide that have unfolded on these lands. We stand in solidarity with the resilience of the Wahta Mohawks First Nations, Moose Deer Point First Nation, and the Moon River MĂ©tis, who continue to call Muskoka home. At Muskoka Futures, we commit to fostering an environment that recognizes and respects the enduring legacy of Indigenous peoples. May our work contribute to the ongoing process of healing and understanding, as we honor the strength, wisdom, and cultural richness of those who have walked this land for generations.
We thank Lacey DeCaire-McCabe, a member of our esteemed Board of Directors and owner of LDM Counselling for helping us to learn and for her generous sharing of this land acknowledgement.
